about

"Sigmar Polke Photoworks: When Pictures Vanish" was a retrospective exhibition of the photographic work of Sigmar Polke, organised in 1995 by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Unfortunately I couldn't visit this exhibition but when I saw the accompanying catalogue I was so impressed that it influenced me for the rest of my life. At that time I had been playing drums for a lot of years but had also been working with sampling and programming and was looking for a way to bring these two worlds together. In the work of Polke I saw all the elements that I was interested in, brought together in such a creative way and resulting in such beautiful artworks, ... here I could SEE the music I wanted to create. For me this was the starting point of some very creative years leading to 3 solo albums and 4 albums with the band I founded, named Vanishing Pictures. I never tried to 'duplicate' the work of Polke but it was a continuous source of inspiration that allowed me to experiment limitlessly and always made me strive to achieve the highest level of artistry.
On the two albums 'for sigmar polke' you can find a compilation/overview of the results of this creative journey. All these tracks were a combination of improvisation and arrangement, 'comprovisations' or 'imprositions' if you like. I have annotated all tracks so if you want more details you can find it there.

And make sure to check out Sigmar Polke, if you don't know him yet. It will be a life-altering experience !

dirk wachtelaer : acoustic drums and live processing

About the cover : Jan Weynants is a fantastic Belgian artist. Although Sigmar Polke has never been a direct influence on his work, his photographs of the 'Pond' series contain a lot of elements that impressed me so much in the photoworks of Polke. The same vanishing and emerging, the same delicate approach, the highest level of artistry, a visual expression of that what can not be expressed by words ...
