In a recent interview I did with Alfred 23 Harth he said “free-improvised music … should not be in a linear (way) … it has to be simultaneous, it has to be one holistic process … kind of telepathic … something that is happening in the moment, anywhere. So it could be from far distance and it could be also on the same stage”. I had to think of these words when I listened to the music Ana and I have created. I recorded my drums in Brussels and Ana recorded her piano in Buenos Aires, a distance of more than 11.000 km. I improvised on my own, with Ana in mind, and Ana improvised on the parts I had sent her. Listening to our music I have to admit I believe that, although this is not a simultaneous in the moment improvisation, some holistic, almost telepathic experience took place. Everything of this recording feels right and if I would have played with Ana together in the moment, at the same place, I think I would have played exactly the same. And if this album should not be proof of what Alfred says it certainly shows Ana’s incredible musicianship and musical empathy, bordering on telepathy. Kindred souls find each other and it certainly warms my heart in these isolated Covid times to be able to communicate and create something so intense, deeply felt and humane, with a musician living as far as Argentina or South Korea.
